In the past, plus size costumes were often limited to large, baggy items, or incorporated the wearer's current wardrobe in. Not so anymore. With a number of stores catering to larger folks, it makes sense that Halloween costumes would start to show up in larger sizes as well. If you're plus size, the first thing to consider is the fit. It might be tempting to choose a larger costume than you need, or find a baggy costume instead of something fitted. Be careful. That Greek toga might seem like a great idea, but think about where the extra fabric will go: if you're prone to wide hips, or a large belly, you'll have fabric bunched and wrinkled in that area, making you look bigger than you are. That being said, there are plenty of costumes out there that come in standard and plus sizes, that you can wear and not feel out of place, or uncomfortable with your choice. If you're considering a sexy costume, like a French Maid or Cheerleader, don't feel you have to pass them up because you're not skinny. Many sexy costumes work great for plus sizes, partially because our extra padding often falls in places that are easy to emphasize, like a larger bust, or smaller waist and wider hips. As long as you size the costume correctly, and don't go too big or too small, you should look fine. Also, it doesn't hurt to consider high heels with the costume, as they lengthen your leg and shape them nicely, which can draw some attention away from problem areas.

The most important thing to remember about buying a costume is this: If it doesn't fit, you need to be able to return it. If you can't try the costume on before buying, make sure you purchase in person, or on line from a company that will allow you to return the costume if it doesn't fit. In this economy, it doesn't pay to part with your hard-earned money only to find out the costume is the wrong size, missing pieces, or falling apart, and then be stuck with it. Be very sure there's a decent return policy in place, or buy from places where you can try them on before you buy.
